Helen Dyne

Helen Dyne is the mother of four lively boys. Henry is 15 - going on 45 - who is full of life and a real charmer. Then come Charlie and Harry (12) twin boys; and her last and ever so quiet but self-assured George, who is 7. Each of them is so special in their own individual way.

“Our eldest son Henry has ADHD and mild autism, which in a nutshell means he struggles socially with knowing right from wrong and tends to get himself into challenging situations: bullying being one of these issues. Within our home he is very dominant and everyday issues can be blown out of proportion due to his defiant nature. He can dig himself into some big holes but then does not understand why he has left behind a tidal wave of frustrated adults. On the lighter side, he is extremely funny and makes everyone laugh so much with his one-liners, and funny faces. You just have to keep one step ahead of him, keep the routine similar, treat each day afresh and you’re on target for a good time. We laugh more than we cry which is so important.

Then there are the twins, Harry and Charlie, who did not come into the world gifted with health. They both had a poor start and Charlie, the smaller twin, had many problems for many years: struggling some days just to stay alive. Now they are normal cheeky teenagers that grunt and stamp and eat their way around the house!

Finally, not forgetting ‘lovely George’. He was diagnosed with mild Asperger’s when he was four. He is a totally different child to Henry but with his own unique way, which demands a completely different parenting approach. He tends to be happy with his own space and takes life literally. He does struggle at school and he now has his own laptop to help him with his ideas within the classroom, as he finds it difficult getting things down on paper.”

Helen not only brings up her four ‘wonderful’ boys but also designs and makes her own glass jewellery.

“After wiping the Marmite off George’s face and packing him off to school, along with the others I head off to do my time. It started off as a bit of a hobby, but then I bought myself a kiln and all the gas equipment I would need to create my own glass beads and pendants.”

So what started as a hobby has now taken off significantly and she designs for her clients, shops and a gallery and, this year - due to its popularity – she is employing a few representatives to sell her designs for her, giving her the time to produce some wonderfully bright, cheerful and vibrant jewellery.
